Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words يُلْقُونَ السَّمْعَN: he said: the devils cast down what they had heard upon every great liar and slanderer.

Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid: يُلْقُونَ السَّمْعَN — the devils cast down what they had heard upon كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍN. He said: they cast down the hearing, he said: the (heard) speech.

His words: وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَاذِبُونَN — He says: and most of those upon whom the devils descend lie in what they say and report.

With what we have said concerning this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke in a corresponding sense.

    * Mention of who said this:

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of al-Zuhrī, concerning the words وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَاذِبُونَN — on the authority of ʿUrwa, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: The devils listen stealthily, then they bring a word of truth. That they cast into the ear of their ally. He said: Then he adds to it more than a hundred lies.
