﴿ مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُمْ ﴾ — He says: "What benefit did the respite bring them, by which We prolonged their lifespan, and the enjoyment by which We let them enjoy life, now that they have not repented of their shirk (the assigning of associates to Allah)? Did Our letting them enjoy benefit them in the least? On the contrary, it harmed them, in that they burdened themselves with additional sins and acquired transgressions which they would not have acquired had they not been allowed to enjoy."

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word ﴿ أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ مَتَّعْنَاهُمْ سِنِينَ ﴾ up to His word ﴿ مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يُمَتَّعُونَ ﴾ — he said: "These are the people of unbelief (kufr)."
