And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

Allah, exalted be His mention, says: Thus did the ʿĀd give the lie to the messenger of their Lord, Hūd. The pronoun in His words فَكَذَّبُوهُ (so they gave him the lie) refers to Hūd. فَأَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ (and We destroyed them) — that is to say: We destroyed the ʿĀd on account of their giving the lie to Our messenger. إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً (Truly in that is a sign) — Allah, exalted be His mention, says: In Our destruction of the ʿĀd on account of their giving the lie to their messenger is truly a lesson and an admonition for your people, O Muḥammad, who give you the lie in what you have brought them from your Lord.
He says: And only a few of those whom We destroyed were believers, according to Allah's foreknowledge.
