Tafseer of The Light · An-Noor · 24:34

And We have certainly sent down to you distinct verses and examples from those who passed on before you and an admonition for those who fear Allah.

Allah, exalted be His praise, says: We have already sent down to you, O people, clear proofs and signs — that is to say: signs that distinguish the true from the false and set this out plainly.

The Qurʾān-reciters (qurrāʾ) differed over the reading of this word. The majority of the exegetes of Medina and a portion of those of Kūfa and Baṣra read "mubayyaṇāt" with fatḥa on the yāʾ — in the meaning of: made clear, because Allah has elaborated them for His servants and made them clear, so that they are clear and explained. The majority of the exegetes of Kūfa read "mubayyiṇāt" with kasra on the yāʾ — in the meaning that the verses themselves make the truth clear to the people and guide them to what is right.

The most correct opinion in our judgement is that these are two well-known readings, that both have been transmitted by the scholars of the qurrāʾ, and that the meanings are close to one another. For when Allah has elaborated them and explained them, they thereby become themselves explanatory of the truth to whoever seeks it from them; and when they explain that to whoever seeks it from them, Allah has made that clear within them. Whoever reads either of the two readings reads correctly.

His statement وَمَثَلا مِنَ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ (and an example from those who passed away before you) — from the nations; وَمَوْعِظَةً (and an admonition) for whoever fears Allah and fears His punishment and is wary of His punishment.
