Tafseer of The Light · An-Noor · 24:26
Evil words are for evil men, and evil men are [subjected] to evil words. And good words are for good men, and good men are [an object] of good words. Those [good people] are declared innocent of what the slanderers say. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.

The exegetes differ over the interpretation of this verse. Some said: its meaning is — evil words are for evil men, and evil men are for evil words; good words are for good people, and good people are for good words.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my paternal uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement الْخَبِيثَاتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ وَالْخَبِيثُونَ لِلْخَبِيثَاتِ (evil words are for evil men, and evil men are for evil words): he said — evil words are for evil men, and evil men are for evil words. Concerning His statement وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ (good words are for good people): good words are for good men, and good men are for good words. The verse was sent down concerning those who uttered the slander (buhtān) against the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. It is also said: evil deeds are for evil people, and good deeds for good people.
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of ʿUthmān ibn al-Aswad, on the authority of Mujāhid: evil words are for evil people, and good words are for good people.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, concerning the statement of Allah الْخَبِيثَاتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ وَالْخَبِيثُونَ لِلْخَبِيثَاتِ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ وَالطَّيِّبُونَ لِلطَّيِّبَاتِ : he said — the good words, however they sound from the mouth of an unbeliever (kāfir) or a believer, are for the believer; and the evil words are for the unbeliever. أُولَئِكَ مُبَرَّءُونَ مِمَّا يَقُولُونَ (these are absolved of what is said) — for both parties are absolved of what is not justified in words.
ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd al-Narsī related to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: الْخَبِيثَاتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ وَالْخَبِيثُونَ لِلْخَبِيثَاتِ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ وَالطَّيِّبُونَ لِلطَّيِّبَاتِ — evil words and deeds are for evil people, and evil people are for evil words and deeds.
Others said: the meaning is: evil women are for evil men, and evil men are for evil women.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning الْخَبِيثَاتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ وَالْخَبِيثُونَ لِلْخَبِيثَاتِ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ وَالطَّيِّبُونَ لِلطَّيِّبَاتِ : he said — the verse was sent down concerning ʿĀʾishah at the time when the hypocrite accused her with slander and falsehood; Allah declared her absolved. ʿAbdallāh ibn Ubayy was evil, and so it was rather fitting that an evil woman should belong to him and he to her. And the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was good, and so it was fitting that a good woman should belong to him; and ʿĀʾishah was the good woman, and it was fitting that the good man should belong to her. أُولَئِكَ مُبَرَّءُونَ مِمَّا يَقُولُونَ — here ʿĀʾishah was absolved. لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ (for them is forgiveness and an honorable provision).
The most correct view concerning the interpretation of this verse is, in our judgment, the view of those who said: by "the evil ones" are meant evil words — ugly and reprehensible words — for evil men and women, and evil people are for evil words; and by "the good ones" are meant good, beautiful words for good people, and good people are for good words.
His statement أُولَئِكَ مُبَرَّءُونَ (these are absolved) — the good people are absolved of evil words; if they utter them, Allah forgives them; and if it is said about them, it harms the one who says it and not them.
As al-Ḥasan transmitted to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: أُولَئِكَ مُبَرَّءُونَ مِمَّا يَقُولُونَ — whoever is good is absolved of every evil word: Allah forgives him. And whoever is evil is absolved of every good word: Allah turns it away from him.
His statement لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ — for these good people there is forgiveness from Allah for their sins, even if an evil word has fallen from them. وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ — and besides the forgiveness there is also for them a noble gift from Allah, and that is the Garden (janna) and the honor He has prepared for them therein.
