Tafseer of The Light · An-Noor · 24:20

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَءُوفٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ

And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Kind and Merciful.

    Allah, exalted be His mention, says: And had it not been for the bounty of Allah upon you, and His mercy toward you, and His continual returning to His creation with His kindness and His benevolence — you would have perished because of what you became entangled in, and the punishment of Allah would swiftly have befallen you. He left the apodosis unstated because the listener knows what is intended through His words thereafter: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ ... the verse.

    يقول تعالى ذكره: ولولا أن تفضَّل الله عليكم أيها الناس ورحمكم، وأن الله ذو رأفة، ذو رحمة بخلقه لهلكتم فيما أفضتم فيه، وعاجلتكم من الله العقوبة. وترك ذكر الجواب لمعرفة السامع بالمراد من الكلام بعده، وهو قوله: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ ... الآية.
