To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people.

فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا — they displayed arrogance toward following him and believing in what he brought them from Allah — وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا عَالِينَ — that is to say: they were a people who stood exalted above the people around them and those in their land, namely the children of Israel and others, by means of injustice — subjugating them by force.\n\nAnd Ibn Zayd said concerning this what Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا عَالِينَ — he said: they exalted themselves above their messengers and showed disobedience to their Lord — that is their arrogance. And he recited: تِلْكَ الدَّارُ الآخِرَةُ — the rest of the verse.
