1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   He says, exalted be His remembrance: We took vengeance upon them; We sent the cry (al-ṣayḥa) over them, and it seized them in truth and justice. That is so because Allah punished them inasmuch as they had deserved the punishment from Him on account of their unbelief (kufr) toward Him and their denial of His Messenger. فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً — He says: We made them like the floating debris (al-ghuthāʾ), which is that which floats upon a flood and the like and from which no benefit whatsoever is derived. This is merely a likeness; the meaning is: We destroyed them and made them like something of no use.

   In a manner corresponding to what we have said, the people of tafsīr spoke.

   It is mentioned who said that:

   Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ — he said: "they were made like the dead, decayed thing of the tree."

   Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us. And al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them together — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: غُثَاءً — "like the weathered, worm-eaten remnants that the flood carries along."

   Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً — he said: "like the weathered, worm-eaten remnants that the flood carries along."

   Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً — he said: "that is the decayed thing."

   Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda — to the same effect.

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً — he said: "This is a likeness that Allah has struck."

   And His word: فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ — He says: Allah has removed the unbelieving people further away from Himself by destroying them, because they did not believe in their Lord, disobeyed His messengers, and wronged themselves.

   Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — he said: "Those are the Thamūd" — meant by His word: فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ .

   يقول تعالى ذكره: فانتقمنا منهم، فأرسلنا عليهم الصيحة، فأخذتهم بالحقّ، وذلك أن الله عاقبهم باستحقاقهم العقاب منه بكفرهم به ، وتكذيبهم رسوله ( فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً ) يقول: فصيرناهم بمنـزلة الغثاء، وهو ما ارتفع على السيل ونحوه، كما لا ينتفع به في شيء فإنما هذا مثل، والمعنى: فأهلكناهم فجعلناهم كالشيء الذي لا منفعة فيه. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. *ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس: ( فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ) يقول: جعلوا كالشيء الميت البالي من الشجر. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء ، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد: ( غُثَاءً ) كالرميم الهامد، الذي يحتمل السيل. حدثنا القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثني حجاج، عن ابن جُرَيج: ( فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً ) قال: كالرميم الهامد الذي يحتمل السيل. حدثنا محمد بن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة: ( فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً ) قال: هو الشيء البالي. حدثنا الحسن، قال: أخبرنا عبد الرزاق، قال: أخبرنا معمر. عن قتادة، مثله. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله: ( فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً ) قال: هذا مثل ضربه الله. وقوله: ( فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ) يقول: فأبعد الله القوم الكافرين بهلاكهم؛ إذ كفروا بربهم ، وعصوا رسله ، وظلموا أنفسهم. حدثنا القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثني حجاج، عن ابن جُرَيج، عن مجاهد، قال: أولئك ثمود، يعني قوله: ( فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَاءً فَبُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ).
