And His saying: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ (And those who turn away from vain talk) — Allah, the Exalted, says: And those who turn away from falsehood and from what Allah reproaches His creatures for.
And in accordance with what we said about this in its exposition, the scholars of tafsīr spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
ʿAlī related to me; he said: ʿAbd Allāh related to us; he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the word of Allah: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ — he said: falsehood.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us; he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Ḥasan: عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَن — he said: from sins.
Al-Ḥasan related to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Ḥasan — the same.
Yūnus related to me; he said: Ibn Wahb informed us; he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning the word of Allah: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَن — he said: the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him ﷺ, and those who were with him of his Companions (ṣaḥāba) who believed in him, followed him, and acknowledged him as truthful — they turned away from vain talk.
