ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ تُبْعَثُونَ

Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.

    It says ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَ (then indeed, after that, you will surely die) in the active participle form, because it is a report about a state that will come upon them but has not yet occurred. The Arabs say of someone who has not yet died: "he will die" (huwa māʾitun wa-mayyitun ʿan qalīl — he is dying and will die after a short while), but they do not say of someone who has already died "māʾit" (one who is dying). Likewise, they say of someone who has a desire for what you possess: "he is desirous of what you possess" (ṭāmiʿun), when he is described as being desirous; but when it is said of him that he will do something he has not yet done, one says: "he is desirous of what you have tomorrow" (huwa ṭāmiʿun fī mā ʿindaka ghadan — he is desirous of what you have, tomorrow). And so it is with everything equivalent to what we have mentioned.

    وإنما قيل: (ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَ) ؛ لأنه خبر عن حال لهم يحدث لم يكن. وكذلك تقول العرب لمن لم يمت: هو مائت وميت عن قليل، ولا يقولون لمن قد مات مائت، وكذلك هو طمع فيما عندك إذا وصف بالطمع، فإذا أخبر عنه أنه سيفعل ولم يفعل قيل: هو طامع فيما عندك غدا، وكذلك ذلك في كلّ ما كان نظيرا لما ذكرناه.
