Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.'

Allah, exalted is His praise, says: إِنَّهُ — the letter hāʾ in His words "innahū" is the hāʾ which the Arabic linguists call the "anonymous hāʾ" (hāʾ majhūla). I have already explained its meaning previously, so it is not necessary to repeat that here. Its function in the sentence — together with what has already been sufficiently explained — conveys the meaning: كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِنْ عِبَادِي that is to say: there was a group of My servants — namely those who believe in Allah — who said in the world: رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا we believe in You and in Your messengers, and in what they have brought from Your side, فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا while You are the best of those who show mercy toward those who are tried — so do not punish us with Your chastisement.
