Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah, exalted be His praise, means by His word قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ("Truly, the believers have succeeded"): those who have believed in Allah and His messenger Muḥammad ﷺ, who acknowledged what he brought them from Allah, and who acted upon what he called them to of that which is named in these verses, have attained the everlasting abode in the gardens of their Lord and are rejoicing in what they sought with Him.
Thus al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq reported to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ — then he said: Kaʿb said: "Allah created with His hand nothing but three things: He created Ādam with His hand, wrote the Torah with His hand, and planted the Garden of Eden with His hand. Then He said to it: Speak! And it said: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ — when it knew what honors were in it."
Sahl ibn Mūsā al-Rāzī related to us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḍarīs related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Abī Qays, on the authority of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ, on the authority of Mujāhid — he said: "When Allah, blessed and exalted, had planted the Garden, He looked at it and said: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ."
He said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar related to us, on the authority of Abī Khalda, on the authority of Abī al-ʿĀliya — he said: "When Allah had created the Garden, He said: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ . And He sent this down as Qurʾān."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Jubayr related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of Maysara — he said: "Allah created nothing with His hand except four things: He created Ādam with His hand, wrote the tablets with His hand, and the Torah with His hand, and planted Eden with His hand. Then He said: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ."
And His word الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ ("those who are humble in their prayer") — Allah, exalted be His mention, says: those who in their prayer (ṣalāh), when they stand in it, are humble — and their humility in it consists of their submission to Allah in it by obeying Him and performing what He has commanded them to perform in it. And it has been said that it was revealed because of the fact that the people, before its revelation, used to direct their gazes toward heaven during the prayer. They were then forbidden by this verse from doing that.
Mention of the narration concerning that:
