Tabari

Tafseer of The Pilgrimage · Al-Hajj · 22:54

And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: So that the people of knowledge concerning Allah may know that what Allah has sent down of His signs — those which He confirmed for His Messenger, and what He erased of that which Satan had cast therein — is the truth from your Lord, O Muḥammad. He says: so that they may affirm it.

He says: so that their hearts may submit to the Qurʾān and assent by affirming it and by acknowledging what they contain.

And indeed, Allah guides those who believe in Allah and His Messenger to the upright truth and the clear truth, by erasing what Satan had cast into the desire of His Messenger — so that the wiles of Satan may not harm them, nor his casting of falsehood upon the tongue of their Prophet.

In accordance with what we have said in this regard, the exegetes have spoken.

Mention of those who said this: al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: وَلِيَعْلَمَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ — he said: he means the Qurʾān.
