Allah, exalted be His praise, says to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: If those who say to you — O Muḥammad — "Is this anything but a human being like yourselves? Will you then approach sorcery while you see?" take you in mockery when they see you and say: "Is this the one who makes mention of your gods?" — out of their unbelief (kufr) towards Allah and their arrogance towards Him — then messengers were indeed already mocked from among Our messengers whom We sent before you to their peoples. He says: and there befell those who had mocked and ridiculed them from among their peoples that which they had mocked — He says, exalted be His praise: that which they had mocked befell them: the plague and the torment (ʿadhāb) of which their messengers had warned them. And there stands يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ — Allah, exalted be His praise, says: those who mock you among these unbelievers will not escape the fate of their predecessors among the peoples who had denied their messengers; the same torment of Allah and His wrath over their mockery of you will befall them as that which befell them.
