Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says: If in the heavens and the earth there were gods to whom worship would be fitting alongside Allah — He Who is the Creator of all things and to Whom belong the worship and the divinity (ulūhiyya) that are fitting for nothing else — لَفَسَدَتا (then they would be corrupted): He says: then the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth would be corrupted. فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ (Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, above what they describe): Allah, exalted is His praise, says: glorification be to Allah and exoneration of Him from what these polytheists (mushrikīn) mendaciously ascribe to Him.
As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا آلِهَةٌ إِلا اللَّهُ لَفَسَدَتَا فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ (if in the two of them there were gods other than Allah, they would be corrupted — glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, above what they describe): He sanctifies Himself when calumny is spoken concerning Him.
