Tabari

Tafseer of The Prophets · Al-Anbiyaa · 21:17

Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with Us - if [indeed] We were to do so.

Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

Allah, Exalted is His remembrance, says: Had We wished to take a wife and a child, We would have taken that from Our own self, but We do not do so, and it is not fitting for Us nor seemly, for it does not befit Allah that He should have a child or a wife.

In a manner similar to how we have explained this verse, the exegetes of the Qurʾān spoke.

    Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Ghaydānī related to me, he said: Abū Qutayba related to us, he said: Sallām ibn Miskīn related to us, he said: ʿUqba ibn Abī Ḥamza related to us, he said: I was present with al-Ḥasan in Mecca — he said: and Ṭāwūs, ʿAṭāʾ, and Mujāhid came to him and asked him about the word of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: لَوْ أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ لَهْوًا لاتَّخَذْنَا (had We wished to take a lāhw, We would have taken one). Al-Ḥasan said: "al-lāhw" is the wife.

Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr al-Sakūnī related to me, he said: Baqiyya ibn al-Walīd related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Hārūn, on the authority of Muḥammad, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word لَوْ أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ لَهْوًا (had We wished to take a lāhw): he said: a wife.

Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word لَوْ أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ لَهْوًا ... to the end of the verse: that is to say, that this shall not be and is not fitting. And "al-lāhw" in the language of the people of Yemen means: the wife.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: لَوْ أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ لَهْوًا (had We wished to take a lāhw): he said: "al-lāhw" in some dialects of the people of Yemen: the wife — لاتَّخَذْنَاهُ مِنْ لَدُنَّا (We would have taken one from Our own self).

As for His word إِنْ كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ (had We been doers of it): Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word إِنْ كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ (had We been doers of it): he said: that is to say: which We shall not do.

Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — he said: they said that Maryam was His consort and ʿĪsā His son, whereupon Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: لَوْ أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ لَهْوًا (had We wished to take a lāhw) — wives and children — لاتَّخَذْنَاهُ مِنْ لَدُنَّا إِنْ كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ (We would have taken one from Our own self, had We been doers of it) — he said: from Us, and then We would not have created paradise nor hell, nor death nor resurrection nor judgment.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word (We would have taken one from Our own self): from Us, and then We would not have created paradise nor hell, nor death nor resurrection.
