ثُمَّ ٱجْتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدَىٰ

Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].

    His statement ثُمَّ اجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدَى — he says: his Lord chose him after his disobedience to Him, and granted him the penitent return to that which pleased Him and to acting in obedience to Him; and that was the granting of repentance (tawba) which He bestowed upon him. His statement (»and guided«) — he says: and He guided him to the penitent return and enabled him to attain it.

    وقوله ( ثُمَّ اجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدَى ) يقول: اصطفاه ربه من بعد معصيته إياه فرزقه الرجوع إلى ما يرضى عنه، والعمل بطاعته، وذلك هو كانت توبته التي تابها عليه ، وقوله (وَهَدَى) يقول: وهداه للتوبة، فوفَّقه لها.
