And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.

The statement concerning the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَكَذَلِكَ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا وَصَرَّفْنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْوَعِيدِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ أَوْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُمْ ذِكْرًا (»And thus We sent it down as an Arabic Qurʾān, and We have set forth therein the threat in various ways, that they may guard themselves, or that it may produce for them a remembrance«) (20:113)
Allah the Exalted says: Just as We urged the believers to good deeds by promising them what We promised, so did We warn the unbelievers — those who persisted in disobedience to Us and who denied Our signs — with the threat; and We sent down this Qurʾān in Arabic, since they were Arabs. وَصَرَّفْنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْوَعِيدِ — and We explained it: he says: and We frightened them therein with all kinds of the threat. لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ — he says: that they may guard themselves against Us, through Our setting forth the threat therein in various ways. أَوْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُمْ ذِكْرًا — he says: or that this Qurʾān may produce for them a remembrance, so that they may reflect and take a lesson from what We did to the communities who denied the messengers before them, and so that they may withdraw from the unbelief in Allah to which they cling.
In a manner similar to what we have said, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَكَذَلِكَ أَنـزلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا وَصَرَّفْنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْوَعِيدِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ — that with which they are warned concerning the matter of Allah and His punishment, and His blows that struck the communities before them. (»or that it may, for them«) the Qurʾān (»produce a remembrance (dhikran)«): that is to say: earnestness and piety (waraʿ).
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his word أَوْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُمْ ذِكْرًا : he said: earnestness and piety (waraʿ). And some said about أَوْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُمْ ذِكْرًا that its meaning is: or it produces for them honor, through their belief in it.
