Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

    The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكَاةَ لَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

(Indeed, those who believe and perform good deeds and maintain the prayer and give the zakāh: for them is their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve) (2:277).

Abū Jaʿfar said: This is an announcement from Allah, Mighty and Exalted is He, that those who believe — that is to say: those who held Allah to be true and His Messenger ﷺ, and that which he has brought from his Lord, namely the prohibition of usury (ribā) and the consuming thereof, and all the rest of the laws of His religion — "and perform good deeds" (wa-ʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāt), namely those which Allah, Mighty and Exalted is He, has commanded them to do and to which He has urged them — "and maintain the prayer" (wa-aqāmū l-ṣalāh), the obligatory prayer (ṣalāh) with observance of its limits, and the performing of it according to its prescribed customs (sunan) — "and give the zakāh" (wa-ātawū l-zakāh), the obligatory alms (zakāh) which rests upon their possessions, after that which had already preceded from them in the consuming of usury, before the coming of the admonition concerning it from their Lord — "for them is their reward" (lahum ajruhum), that is to say: the recompense for that, proceeding from their deeds, their faith, and their alms — "with their Lord" (ʿinda rabbihim), on the day of their need of Him at their return (in the hereafter) — "and no fear shall come upon them" (wa-lā khawfun ʿalayhim), on that day, of His punishment because of that which had preceded from them in their time of ignorance (jāhiliyya) and their unbelief (kufr), before there came to them an admonition from their Lord, namely the consuming of that which they had consumed of usury — because of their return to Him and their repentance to Allah, Mighty and Exalted is He, from it, at the moment that the admonition of their Lord came to them, and because of their affirmation as true of Allah's promise and His threat — "nor shall they grieve" (wa-lā hum yaḥzanūn), over their abandoning of that which they had abandoned in the worldly life of the consuming of usury and the dealing therewith, when they behold with their own eyes the abundant reward of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, while they had abandoned that which they had abandoned of it in the worldly life in the seeking of His good pleasure in the hereafter, so that they obtained what had been promised to them for that abandonment.
