Tabari

Tafseer of Mary · Maryam · 19:76

And Allah increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for recourse.

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

The Exalted says: and Allah increases for whoever walks the straight path, and is guided to the road of right direction, and believes in his Lord, has affirmed His verses, acts in accordance with His command, and refrains from what He has forbidden — (for such a one whom Allah thus increases) in guidance, through the newly received obligations (faraʾid) imposed upon him, which he acknowledges to be binding to fulfill and acts upon; that is an increase from Allah in his guidance through His verses, guidance upon his guidance. This resembles His word: وَإِذَا مَا أُنـزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَذِهِ إِيمَانًا فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ (and whenever a sura is sent down, some of them say: which of you has this increased in faith? But as for those who believe — it has increased them in faith, and they rejoice).

Some explained that thus: Allah increases for those who are guided in guidance through the nāsikh (the abrogating) and the mansūkh (the abrogated) of the Qurʾān — they believe in the nāsikh just as they previously believed in the mansūkh; that is an increase of guidance from Allah for them upon their earlier guidance.

وَالْبَاقِيَاتُ الصَّالِحَاتُ خَيْرٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا (and the abiding good deeds are better with your Lord as reward): the Exalted says: the deeds which Allah has commanded His servants and with which He has been pleased — the abiding, imperishable, good deeds — are better with your Lord as recompense for those who possess them. وَخَيْرٌ مَرَدًّا (and better as return): for them, than the dwelling places of these polytheists (mushrikīn) and their gatherings in which they vaunt themselves over the believers in the worldly life.

I have already expounded the meaning of "al-bāqiyāt al-ṣāliḥāt" (the abiding good deeds) and mentioned the differences of opinion concerning it, and indicated the correct opinion in what preceded, with what dispenses me from repeating it here.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: ʿUmar ibn Rāshid informed us, on the authority of Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, on the authority of Abū Salama ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf: he said: the Prophet ﷺ was sitting one day and took a dry branch; he made its leaves fall and then said: "Indeed, the saying of Lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa-Allāhu akbar, wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāh, wa-subḥāna Allāh, makes the sins fall just as the wind makes the leaves of this tree fall. Take hold of them, O Abū al-Dardāʾ, in case a separation is brought between you and them — they are the al-bāqiyāt al-ṣāliḥāt, and they are among the treasures of the Paradise (janna)." Abū Salama said: Abū al-Dardāʾ, whenever he mentioned this report, used to say: "Then I shall surely praise Allah (uhallilanna), and proclaim Allah great (ukabbira), and glorify Allah (usabbiḥ) — until whoever does not know me would suppose that I am insane."
