His saying إِذْ نَادَى رَبَّهُ نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا — He says: when he called upon his Lord and asked Him with a soft call, that is to say: while he kept his prayer and his supplication to Him in secret — out of aversion to ostentation (riyāʾ).
As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — concerning His saying إِذْ نَادَى رَبَّهُ نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا : that is to say, in secret; and indeed Allah knows the pure heart and hears the soft voice.
Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — concerning His saying إِذْ نَادَى رَبَّهُ نِدَاءً خَفِيًّا : he said: Without wishing to show off.
