The statement concerning the explanation of the word of Allah the Exalted: قَالَ أَمَّا مَنْ ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهُ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ إِلَى رَبِّهِ فَيُعَذِّبُهُ عَذَابًا نُكْرًا (87)
Allah the Exalted says — He whose praise is exalted —: (he said: as for the wrongdoer, we shall surely punish him) — that is to say: as for the unbeliever, we shall kill him.
As al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: (as for the wrongdoer, we shall surely punish him): he said: that is the death penalty.
And His word (then he is brought back to his Lord, who then gives him a dreadful punishment) means: then he returns to Allah the Exalted after his death penalty, and Allah then punishes him with a tremendous punishment — and that is the dreadful (al-nukr), namely the punishment of Hell (jahannam).
