The explanation of the word of Allah, exalted is He: الَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِي غِطَاءٍ عَنْ ذِكْرِي وَكَانُوا لا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا (101)
Allah, exalted is He, says: On that day We laid the Hellfire bare before the unbelievers who did not consider Allah's signs, did not reflect upon them, and did not ponder His proofs, so that they might draw a lesson from them, remember, turn to the oneness of Allah, and submit to His commands and prohibitions. And they were not able to listen to Allah's remembrance — that remembrance by which He admonished them and the exposition He gave them in the verses of His Book — because of Allah's forsaking them, the dominion of wretched fate over them, and their preoccupation with disbelief in Allah and obedience to the devil; so that they might draw a lesson from it, reflect upon it, distinguish right guidance from error, and disbelief from belief.
Mujāhid used to say the following about this, as it was related to us by Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, who said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us. And al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word لا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا : he said: They do not understand it.
Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning وَكَانُوا لا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا : he said: They do not know it.
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word الَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِي غِطَاءٍ عَنْ ذِكْرِي — the verse: he said: These are the people of disbelief (kufr).
