Tafseer of The Night Journey · Al-Israa · 17:41
And We have certainly diversified [the contents] in this Qur'an that mankind may be reminded, but it does not increase the disbelievers except in aversion.

Allah the Exalted says: وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا — for these polytheistic slanderers of Allah — فِي هَذَا الْقُرْآنِ — the lessons (ʿibar), the signs (āyāt), and the proofs (ḥujaj). We have set forth therein for them parables, warned them therein, and admonished them therein — لِيَذَّكَّرُوا — that is to say: so that they might reflect upon those proofs against them, and thereby perceive the error of that to which they cling, draw a lesson from the examples, and let themselves be admonished thereby, and turn back from their ignorance. But they draw no lesson and do not reflect upon the signs and admonitions that reach them. And Our admonition only increases them إِلَّا نُفُورًا — that is to say: only in fleeing from the truth, keeping themselves remote from it, and fleeing from it. The word nufūr (aversion, flight) here is a maṣdar (verbal noun) of the saying: nāʾban fulān min hādhā l-amr yanfiru minhu nafran wa-nufūran.
