Allah the Exalted says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: "Say, O Muḥammad, to those who say to you: 'We will not believe you until you cause a spring to gush forth for us from the earth' (17:90): believe in this Qurʾān — which, even if mankind and the jinn were to join together to produce something like it, they could not do so, even if they supported one another (17:88) — or do not believe in it. For your belief in it adds nothing to the treasuries of Allah's mercy, and your disbelief does not diminish them. If you deny the Qurʾān: those who were granted knowledge concerning Allah and His signs before its revelation — the believers among the People of the two Books (ahl al-kitāb) — when this Qurʾān is recited to them, fall down upon their chins in worship, in honor and reverence for it, and out of knowledge that it comes from Allah."

The exegetes differed concerning what is intended by يَخِرُّونَ لِلأَذْقَانِ (they fall down upon their chins). Some said: by this the faces are intended.

    * Mention of who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word يَخِرُّونَ لِلأَذْقَانِ سُجَّدًا (they fall down upon their chins in worship): "that is, upon their faces."

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning يَخِرُّونَ لِلأَذْقَانِ سُجَّدًا (they fall down upon their chins in worship): "upon their faces."

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda: likewise.

Others said: by this the beards are intended.

    * Mention of who said that:

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, saying: al-Ḥasan said concerning يَخِرُّونَ لِلأَذْقَانِ (they fall down upon their chins): "the beards."
