فَأَصَابَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

So they were struck by the evil consequences of what they did and were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

    He, exalted be His mention, says: Then these peoples of the former communities — who did just as these polytheists of Quraysh do — were struck by the evil consequences of what they perpetrated, that is to say: the punishments for their sins and the retributions for the transgressions which they committed. (وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ) — He says: and the punishment of Allah descended upon them — that which they used to mock and deride when the messengers of Allah warned them of it — and it struck them and not others among the people who believed in Allah.

    يقول تعالى ذكره: فأصاب هؤلاء الذين فعلوا من الأمم الماضية فعل هؤلاء المشركين من قريش سيئات ما عملوا ، يعني عقوبات ذنوبهم ، ونقم معاصيه التي اكتسبوها( وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ) يقول: وحلّ بهم من عذاب الله ما كانوا يستهزئون منه ، ويسخرون عند إنذارهم ذلك رسلُ الله، ونـزل ذلك بهم دون غيرهم من أهل الإيمان بالله.
