1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الألِيمُ — He says: and inform them likewise that My punishment, for whoever persists in disobeying Me and continues therein without showing repentance for it, is the agonizing, tormenting punishment that is matched by no other punishment whatsoever. This is a warning from Allah to His creation against daring to commit the act of disobedience to Him, and a command to them to turn back (ināba) and to repentance (tawba).

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الألِيمُ : he said: it has reached us that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "Were the servant to know the extent of Allah's forgiveness, he would refrain from nothing forbidden; and were he to know the extent of His punishment, he would destroy himself."

   Al-Mathnā related to me, saying: Isḥāq informed us, saying: Ibn al-Makkī informed us, saying: Ibn al-Mubārak informed us, saying: Muṣʿab ibn Thābit related to us, saying: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAbdallāh related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Rabāḥ, on the authority of a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us through the door by which the Banū Shayba enter, and said: I see you laughing! Then he turned his back until he was at the Stone, then he returned to us and said: when I went out, Jibrīl ﷺ appeared and said: O Muḥammad, truly Allah says: why do you make My servants despair? Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful, and that My punishment is the agonizing, tormenting punishment."

   ( وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الألِيمُ ) يقول: وأخبرهم أيضا أن عذابي لمن أصرّ على معاصيّ وأقام عليها ولم يتب منها، هو العذاب الموجع الذي لا يشبهه عذاب. هذا من الله تحذير لخلقه التقدم على معاصيه، وأمر منه لهم بالإنابة والتوبة. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله ( نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الألِيمُ ) قال: بلغنا أن نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " لَوْ يَعلمُ العبدُ قَدْر عَفْوِ اللَّهِ لما تورّعَ من حرام، وَلَو يَعلم قَدْر عَذَابهِ لَبخَع نفسَه ". حدثني المثنى، قال: أخبرنا إسحاق، قال: أخبرنا ابن المكيّ، قال: أخبرنا ابن المبارك، قال: أخبرنا مصعب بن ثابت، قال: ثنا عاصم بن عبد الله، عن ابن أبي رباح، عن رجل من أصحاب النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: " طَلَع عَلَيْنَا رسولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من الباب الذي يدخل منه بنو شيبة، فقال: ألا أرَاكُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ؟ ثم أدبر حتى إذا كان عند الحجر رجع إلينا القهقرى، فقال: إنّي لمَّا خَرَجْتُ جاءَ جَبْرَئِيل صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ: يا مُحَمَّد إنَّ الله يَقُولُ: لِمَ تُقَنِّطُ عبادِي؟ نبِّئ عبادِي أنّي أنا الغَفُورُ الرَّحيمُ وأنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ العَذَابُ الألِيمُ".
