His statement وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ — Allah, exalted be His praise, means by this: Truly, your Lord, O Muḥammad, will gather to Himself all the first ones and the last ones on the Day of Resurrection — both the obedient and the disobedient among them, and every creature of His creation, those who came early and those who came late.
In accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ : he said: that is to say: the first and the last.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to us, he said: Abū Khālid al-Qurashī related to us, he said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning the statement وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ : he said: these from here, and those from there.
Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ : he said: they will all die, then their Lord will gather them.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to us, he said: ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim related to us, on the authority of Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, on the authority of ʿĀmir, concerning وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ : he said: Allah will gather them all on the Day of Resurrection. Al-Ḥasan said: ʿAlī said: Dāwūd said: I heard ʿĀmir explaining the words إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ : he says: Truly, your Lord is wise in the governance of His creation — in giving life when He gives them life, and in causing death when He causes them to die — and knowing concerning their number and their deeds, and concerning the living and the dead among them, the one who came early and the one who came late.
As Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: Allah has known them all — that is to say: those who came early and those who came late.
