And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

His statement وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (and there comes to them no messenger but they mock him): this means: there comes to them no messenger from Allah—to the factions of the former peoples—a messenger whom Allah sends to them with the call to His oneness and obedience to Him—but they mock him. He says: they ridiculed the messenger whom Allah sent to them, out of arrogance and rebellion against their Lord.
