And they had planned their plan, but with Allah is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.

He, exalted be His mention, says: And you dwelt in this world in the dwellings of those who denied Allah and thereby wronged themselves, of the peoples who were before you. وَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمْ كَيْفَ فَعَلْنَا بِهِمْ — He says: and you came to know how We destroyed them when they were defiant toward their Lord and persisted in their insolence and disbelief. وَضَرَبْنَا لَكُمُ الأمْثَالَ — He says: and We set forth for you parables concerning that to which you clung in ascribing partners to Allah (shirk), with comparable cases, yet you did not turn back nor repent of your disbelief. And now you ask for respite to repent, while there has already descended upon you what has descended upon you of chastisement — that shall by no means come about.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes also spoke.
* Mention of who said this:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَسَكَنْتُمْ فِي مَسَاكِنِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ — he said: the people dwelt in the dwellings of the people of Nūḥ, of ʿĀd and Thamūd, and of the generations in between them, numerous peoples who had perished. وَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمْ كَيْفَ فَعَلْنَا بِهِمْ وَضَرَبْنَا لَكُمُ الأمْثَالَ — By Allah, He sent His messengers and sent down His books, and set forth for you the parables. In this none is deaf except him who is truly deaf, and none is ruined except him who is already cast away. So understand, then, the command of Allah.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word وَسَكَنْتُمْ فِي مَسَاكِنِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمْ كَيْفَ فَعَلْنَا بِهِمْ — he said: they inhabited their settlements: Madyan, al-Ḥijr, and the settlements whose inhabitants Allah had chastised; and it became clear to you how Allah dealt with them, and He struck for them their parables.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to us, saying: Shabāba related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word الأمْثَالَ — he said: the comparable cases (al-ashbāh).
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — identically.
