Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: as for those who break the covenant with Allah — and that breaking is the transgression of Allah's command and acting in disobedience to Him — مِنْ بَعْدِ مِيثَاقِهِ — He says: after they have bound themselves before Allah to act according to what He commanded them — وَيَقْطَعُونَ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَنْ يُوصَلَ — He says: and those who sever the family ties (kinship bonds) which Allah commanded them to maintain — وَيُفْسِدُونَ فِي الأَرْضِ — their corruption therein is: acting in disobedience to Allah — أُولَئِكَ لَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ — He says: for these is the curse, that is to say: the removal from His mercy and the exclusion from His gardens — وَلَهُمْ سُوءُ الدَّارِ — He says: and for them is that which grieves them in the abode of the Hereafter.
— Al-Mutannā related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās — he said: the greatest of the major sins (kabāʾir) is the ascribing of partners to Allah (shirk), for Allah says: وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ الطَّيْرُ (Sūrat al-Ḥajj:31); and the breaking of the covenant, and the severing of the family ties — for Allah the Exalted says: أُولَئِكَ لَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوءُ الدَّارِ — that is to say: the evil end.
— Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me — he said: Ibn Jurayj said concerning His word وَيَقْطَعُونَ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَنْ يُوصَلَ : he said: it has reached us that the Prophet ﷺ said: "If you do not visit your blood relative walking with your feet, and you do not give him from your wealth, then you have severed the family tie."
— Muḥammad b. al-Mutannā related to me, saying: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar related to us, saying: Šuʿba related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr b. Murra, on the authority of Muṣʿab b. Saʿd — he said: I asked my father about this verse: قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِالأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَالا * الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا (Sūrat al-Kahf:103-104): are they the Ḥarūrīya? He said: no, but the Ḥarūrīya are And Saʿd used to call them the corrupt ones (fāsiqīn).
— Ibn al-Mutannā related to us, saying: Abū Dāwūd related to us, saying: Šuʿba related to us, on the authority of ʿAmr b. Murra — he said: I heard Muṣʿab b. Saʿd say: I held the Qurʾān up for Saʿd; he recited this verse — then he mentioned something similar to what is in the report of Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar.
