And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."

The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَلَمَّا فَتَحُوا مَتَاعَهُمْ وَجَدُوا بِضَاعَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالُوا يَا أَبَانَا مَا نَبْغِي هَذِهِ بِضَاعَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ ذَلِكَ كَيْلٌ يَسِيرٌ (65)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: When the brothers of Yūsuf opened the goods that they had taken with them from Yūsuf in Egypt, وَجَدُوا بِضَاعَتَهُمْ — that is, the price of the grain that they had measured out from him — returned to them; قَالُوا يَا أَبَانَا مَا نَبْغِي هَذِهِ بِضَاعَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا — that is, they said to their father: "What more do we desire? This is our trading merchandise, given back to us!" — in order to set his heart at ease through the good that had been done to them in the return of their merchandise.
If the expression is directed toward this meaning, "mā" is an interrogative word in the position of a direct object of the word نَبْغِي .
Toward this explanation Qatāda also directed it:
19476 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning the words مَا نَبْغِي : that is, what do we desire more than this — our merchandise has been given back to us and the measure has been paid to us in full.
His words وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا mean: we will go to seek food for our families and buy it for them.
For this one says: "māra fulān ahlahu yamīruhum mayran" — and the words of the poet also testify to this:
"I sent you out to fetch provisions, but you stayed away a year — when will your aid reach the one whom you come to help?"
وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا — the brother whom you send with us. وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ — that is: we will add to our loads a camel-load of food; there will be measured out for us as much as an additional camel can carry. ذَلِكَ كَيْلٌ يَسِيرٌ — that is: this is a small load:
19477 — Al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ — he said: each man among them had a camel-load; they said: "Send our brother with us and we will become one camel-load more." Ibn Jurayj said: Mujāhid said: كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ is a donkey-load — this is a dialectal word; al-Qāsim said: Mujāhid meant that "the mount" (ḥimār) in some dialects is called "baʿīr."
19478 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning the words وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ : that is, a camel-load.
19479 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq: وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ — by this we count an additional camel among our camels. ذَلِكَ كَيْلٌ يَسِيرٌ .
Notes: In the printed edition it reads "returned to him," but what we have adopted is correct. — The poet is unknown to me and I have not come across the verse anywhere, though I think I know it from somewhere. — The addition between brackets "of" is required by the context.
