   The explanation of the word of Allah, the Exalted: وَاتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ آبَائِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ مَا كَانَ لَنَا أَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ذَلِكَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَشْكُرُونَ (And I have followed the religion of my fathers Ibrāhīm, Isḥāq, and Yaʿqūb. It is not for us to associate anything as a partner with Allah (shirk). That is of Allah's favor upon us and upon mankind — but most people are not thankful.) [12:38]

   Abū Jaʿfar said: By His word وَاتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ آبَائِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ he means: I have followed their religion, not that of the polytheists (mushrikīn). مَا كَانَ لَنَا أَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ — he says: It is not permitted for us to assign a partner (shirk) to Allah in His worship and obedience; rather, what is incumbent upon us is to glorify Him with worship-alone (ālūha) and with veneration-alone. ذَلِكَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا — he says: My following the religion of my fathers Ibrāhīm, Isḥāq, and Yaʿqūb in Islām, and my abandoning the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah and who are disbelievers in the Hereafter, is of Allah's favor which He bestowed upon us — He bestowed kindness upon us by honoring us with it. وَعَلَى النَّاسِ — he says: And that is also of Allah's favor upon mankind, because He sent us to them as callers to His oneness (tawhīd) and His obedience. وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَشْكُرُونَ — he says: But whoever rejects Allah does not give thanks for this favor of His, because he does not know who bestowed it upon him and does not recognize the benefactor.

   The exegetes are in agreement with what we have said about this.

   19288 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazid related to us, saying: Saʿid related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — concerning His word ذَلِكَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى النَّاسِ — that he said: "We have been told that Abū al-Dardāʾ used to say: 'How many a one is thankful for a favor that was not bestowed upon him — without his knowing it; and how many a bearer of understanding has no understanding himself.'"

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَاتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ آبَائِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ مَا كَانَ لَنَا أَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ذَلِكَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَشْكُرُونَ (38) قال أبو جعفر : يعني بقوله: (واتبعت ملة آبائي إبراهيم وإسحاق ويعقوب)، واتبعت دينهم لا دين أهل الشرك ، (ما كان لنا أن نشرك بالله من شيء)، يقول: ما جاز لنا أن نجعل لله شريكًا في عبادته وطاعته ، بل الذي علينا إفراده بالألُوهة والعبادة ، (ذلك من فضل الله علينا)، يقول: اتباعي ملة آبائي إبراهيم وإسحاق ويعقوب على الإسلام ، وتركي ملة قوم لا يؤمنون بالله وهم بالآخرة هم كافرون ، من فضل الله الذي تفضّلَ به علينا ، فأنعم إذ أكرمنا به ، (وعلى الناس)، يقول: وذلك أيضًا من فضل الله على الناس ، إذ أرسلنا إليهم دعاةً إلى توحيده وطاعته ، (ولكن أكثر الناس لا يشكرون)، يقول: ولكن من يكفر بالله لا يشكر ذلك من فضله عليه ، لأنه لا يعلم من أنعم به عليه ولا يعرف المتفضِّل به . * * * وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل . *ذكر من قال ذلك: 19287 - حدثني علي قال، حدثنا عبد الله قال ، حدثني معاوية ، عن علي ، عن ابن عباس ، قوله: (ذلك من فضل الله علينا)، أن جعلنا أنبياء ، (وعلى الناس) ، يقول: أن بعثنا إليهم رسلا. 19288 - حدثنا بشر قال ، حدثنا يزيد قال ، حدثنا سعيد ، عن قتادة ، قوله: (ذلك من فضل الله علينا وعلى الناس)، ذكر لنا أن أبا الدرداء كان يقول: يا رُبَّ شاكرٍ نعمةِ غيرِ منعم عليه لا يدري، وربّ حامل فقه غيرِ فقيه.
