And His words مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ — Allah, the Exalted, whose remembrance be glorified, says: What did his wealth avail him, and did it avert from him the wrath of Allah? وَمَا كَسَبَ — and that is his children. The scholars of exegesis are in agreement with what we have said about this.

Mention of those who said this:

Al-Ḥasan ibn Dāwūd ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Ibn Khaytham, on the authority of Abī al-Ṭufayl, who said: The sons of Abū Lahab came to Ibn ʿAbbās and were disputing over the house. Ibn ʿAbbās stood up to separate them — his sight had already been lost — but one of them pushed him until he fell onto the bed. He became angry and said: "Take these evil earnings away from me."

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Abī Bakr al-Hudhalī, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Sufyān, on the authority of a man from Banū Makhzūm, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, that one day he saw the children of Abū Lahab fighting with one another, and he kept trying to separate them, saying: "These are the fruits of his earnings."

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ — he said: what he earned is his children.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — all together on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words of Allah وَمَا كَسَبَ — he said: his children — they are among his earnings.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words of Allah وَمَا كَسَبَ — he said: his children.
