The discourse on the explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: وَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا شُعَيْبًا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا وَأَخَذَتِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا الصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ (And when Our command came, We saved Shuʿayb and those who believed with him through a mercy from Us. And the cry seized those who had committed wrong, so that they lay crouched in their dwellings.) — (11:94)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, the Exalted, whose remembrance be glorified, says: When Our decree concerning the people of Shuʿayb, to punish them, had come, We saved Shuʿayb — Our messenger — and those who believed in him and trusted him in what he had brought them from their Lord, together with Shuʿayb, from Our punishment which We sent down upon his people. بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا — through a mercy from Us, toward him and toward those who believed in him and followed him in what he had brought them from their Lord. And the cry of the heaven struck those who had committed wrong and extinguished them, and destroyed them on account of their disbelief in their Lord. It has been said that Jibrīl, peace be upon him, called out to them with a cry that drove their souls out of their bodies. فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ — they lay fallen upon their knees, cast down in their courtyards.
