So woe to those who pray

And His word: فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ * الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ (Woe to those who pray — those who are heedless of their prayer.)
He — exalted be His remembrance — says: The valley that flows with the festering fluid of the inhabitants of Hell (jahannam) is appointed for the hypocrites (munāfiqūn) who pray but by their prayer do not intend Allah — Mighty and Majestic — and who are heedless in their prayer when they perform it.
The scholars of Qurʾānic exegesis (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning the meaning of His word: عَنْ صَلاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ (heedless of their prayer). Some of them said: by this is meant that they delay the prayer beyond its appointed time, so that they perform it only after the time of the prayer has elapsed.
