And concerning His word: يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ — "he thinks that his wealth has made him immortal":

He says: he thinks that the wealth which he has gathered and counted, and which he was too miserly to spend, will cause him to remain in this world and will ward off death from him. And it has been said: "akhladahu" — it has made him immortal — while the meaning is: "yukhliduhu" — it will make him immortal; just as it is said of a man who does something that will be the cause of his ruin: "by Allāh, so-and-so has perished, by Allāh, so-and-so has died" — with the meaning that he is perishing because of what he has done, while he has not actually died yet and has not yet perished. And as is said of a man who commits a ruinous sin: "by Allāh, so-and-so has entered the Fire."
