The explanation of the interpretation of the word of Allah the Exalted: قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَتَاكُمْ عَذَابُهُ بَيَاتًا أَوْ نَهَارًا مَاذَا يَسْتَعْجِلُ مِنْهُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ (Say: Have you considered that if His punishment comes to you by night or by day — what is it that the criminals seek to hasten of it?) (10:50)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted, may His mention be exalted, says: Say, O Muḥammad, to these polytheists (mushrikīn) from your people: Have you considered what would happen if the punishment of Allah were to come to you biyātan — that is to say: by night — or by day?
When the Hour arrives and the Day of Resurrection comes to pass — will you then be able to ward off that punishment from yourselves? Allah the Exalted, may His mention be exalted, says: What is it that the criminals — those who do not believe in Allah — wish to hasten of the descent of the punishment, while they are the very ones who will be scorched by its fire and none other — and they will not be able to avert that punishment from themselves?
