The explanation of the word of Allah: وَيَقُولُونَ لَوْلا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ فَقُلْ إِنَّمَا الْغَيْبُ لِلَّهِ فَانْتَظِرُوا إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِرِينَ (20)
(And they say: "Why was no sign sent down upon him from his Lord?" Then say: "The unseen belongs to Allah. So wait; I am with you among those who wait.")
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted be His praise, says: And these polytheists (mushrikīn) say: "Why was no sign sent down upon Muḥammad from his Lord?" — that is to say: a proof and an indication by which we may know that Muḥammad speaks the truth in what he says. Allah said to him: "Then say" — O Muḥammad — "the unseen belongs to Allah"; that is to say: no one knows the one who does that except Him, great be His praise, for no one knows the unseen — that is to say: the secret and hidden matters — except Allah. "So wait, O people, for Allah's judgment concerning us, by the hastening of His punishment against the one among us who defends the false cause, and by granting victory to the one who possesses the truth; I am with you among those who wait for that." And Allah, exalted be His praise, indeed did this truly: He rendered judgment between them and him, in that He caused them to be killed by the sword on the Day of Badr.
